Congo presents one of the world's deadliest emergencies. Since 1998, over five million people have died. The conflict is characterised by endemic levels of sexual violence. Indeed in just the first nine months of 2009 there were 7,500 reported cases of rape in eastern Congo alone. The situation is so extreme that Margot Wallström, the UN’s special representative on sexual violence in conflict, has recently called Congo “the rape capital of the world.”

Women in Congo carry the heaviest of burdens. They suffer rape, violence, torture, are forced to flee their homes, and many watch two, four, even seven children die from preventable illnesses. Yet in the midst of all this the women of Congo are standing strong, holding families and communities together, and playing a vital role in bringing peace to their country.

Hear from an expert panel discussing the impact of the Congo conflict on women and the vital role that women are playing in building a stable country. Panel members will include:

• Christine Karumba - Women for Women International, Congo Country Director

• Sam Roddick - Human Rights Activist, recently visited the Congo

• Susan Schulman - Human Rights Photo Journalist and winner of this year’s Amnesty Media Award

• Judith Wanga - from the BBC 3 documentary Congo : The world’s most dangerous place to be a woman.

The panel will take questions from the audience.

Le Congo est la scène d'une des crises les plus meurtrières au monde, qui a fait plus de 5 millions de victimes depuis 1998. Le conflit est caractérisé par des niveaux endémiques de violence sexuelle. En effet pendant les 9 premiers mois de 2009, 7,500 cas de viol ont été reportés dans le seul Congo de l'est. La situation est tellement grave que Margot Wallström, spécialiste au sein des Nations Unies en matière de violence sexuelle en conflit, a récemment qualifié le Congo de “capitale mondiale du viol.”

Ce sont les femmes qui portent le fardeau le plus lourd au Congo. Elles subissent viol, violence, torture, sont obligées de fuir leurs foyers, et nombreuses sont celles qui voient 2, 4, ou même 7 de leurs enfants mourir de maladies guérissables. Malgré tout cela, les femmes au Congo restent fortes, ce sont elles qui gardent les familles et communautés unies, et qui jouent un rôle vital dans la restauration de la paix dans leur pays.

Venez écouter un panel d'experts parler de l'impact du conflit au Congo sur les femmes et le rôle vital qu'elles jouent dans la construction d'un pays stable. Sont membres du panel:
