Everyone in the Drop-in Cafe has a story to tell. Here Azumati Kiboko talks about the meaning of his name - literally 'Ambassador of the hippopotami'...

I come from an ethnic group called Balengola. This ethnic group is found in the east of the DRC, about 125km from Kisangani. The Balengola are found in Ubundu, which is a territory in the sub region of Tshopo. The language spoken there is Lingala.

I am descended from a royal family ‘Chef Coutumier’ (Chief).

A conflict broke out over the succession in the family when my father succeeded my grandfather. My grandfather adopted my paternal uncle when he was a child. He started this conflict, hoping to take power.

A tribal war broke out.

To get my mother, who was pregnant, to safety,  my father decided it would be wise to send her to Kisangani. To reach this place, you have to cross the river Lwiki. This river is so full of fish that it’s brown, the colour of tea in a glass.

When my mother reached the river with my father and her bodyguards, she saw that there was no choice but to cross. This river is notoriously dangerous. Many people have perished in it.

My father, as Chief, called on our forefathers to protect the canoe which would carry my mother across. Suddenly six hippopotami came out of the water. Two on the right of the canoe, two on the left, one behind and one in front. They protected the canoe in this way until they reached the other side of the river.

This is what saved my mother.

On arriving in Kisangani, my mother gave birth and gave me the name of ‘Ambassador of the Hippopotami’, on my father’s orders.

Because normally the hippopotami in this river never spare the lives of men.

Je viens d’une ethnie appelée communément ‘Balengola’. Cette ethnie est localisée dans la province orientale de RDC a 125 km de Kisangani. Les ‘Balengola’ sont

localisés a Ubundu qui est un territoire de la sous région de Tshopo. La langue parlée de cette région est Lengola.

Je suis issu d’une famille royale de ‘Chef Coutumier’ : un conflit a éclaté entre les membres de ma famille : mon grand père avait adopte mon oncle paternel des son enfance et lui aussi voulait la succession.

Une guerre tribale a commencé.

Pour mettre ma mère, qui était enceinte, en sécurité, mon père a juge qu’il était bon de l’envoyer a Kisangani. Pour atteindre set endroit, vous devez d’abord traverser la rivière Lwiki, une rivière pleine de crocodiles et d’hippopotames. Cette rivière est tellement poissonneuse que sa couleur est comme du ‘the dans un verre’.

Quand ma mère est arrive a la rivière avec mon père et ses gardes du corps, elle a vu qu’elle n’avait pas d’autre choix que de traverser.  Cette rivière este très dangereuse et beaucoup de personnes y on péri.

Mon père, en sa qualité de ‘Chef Coutumier’, a évoqué les ancêtres afin de protéger la pirogue dans laquelle ma mère a pris place. Tout a coup, six hippopotames émergent de l’eau, deux a droite de la pirogue, deux a gauche, un devant and un derrière. Ils on donc encadre la pirogue jusqu’a l’autre rive.

C’est ainsi que ma mère a eu la vie sauve.

Arrive a Kisangani, ma mère m’a mis au monde et m’a donné, sur ordre de mon père, le nom d’Ambassadeur des Hippopotames : car des hippopotames de cette rivière n’ont jamais épargné les hommes.
